Rice bran is the only oilseed raw material with a shelf life measured in hours. The moment bran leaves the milling machine, lipase starts splitting its oil and free fatty acid climbs. Every decision on a rice bran line — where the plant sits, how big it is, whether you extrude, how much refining loss you accept — follows from that one fact, not from the price of equipment.

The Clock: What Happens to Bran Hour by Hour

Elapsed Stage What changes What to do
0-6 hours Bran leaves the mill FFA still low. This is the only window in which premium grade is possible. Collect fast, keep it cool and ventilated
6-24 hours Transport and storage FFA rising steadily; heat and moisture in a closed pile accelerate it. Covered trucks, shallow storage, no heaping
24-72 hours Without stabilizing FFA high enough to raise refining loss noticeably and darken the crude oil. Extrude on arrival, or expect the loss
Beyond 72 hours Bran is now a liability FFA and colour make good oil impossible; only low-grade refining or feed use remains. Do not plan a plant on this material

Collection Radius Decides Where the Plant Goes

Bran intake Paddy milling behind it Collection footprint
50 TPD bran About 700 TPD paddy milling A cluster of mid-size mills within roughly 30-50 km
100 TPD bran About 1,400 TPD paddy milling A district-level collection network
300 TPD bran About 4,300 TPD paddy milling A regional hub, or several satellite extruders feeding one plant

Bran yield is roughly 6-8% of paddy weight. Figures above are derived from that ratio and are for siting purposes only — the real constraint is how many hours the furthest mill is from your intake.

Stabilizing: Extrusion Is the Dividing Line

Why extrusion, and not just drying

Drying removes water but leaves the enzyme system largely intact. Extrusion puts the bran through heat, pressure and shear for a few seconds, denatures lipase and peroxidase, and leaves a dense, porous pellet. Stabilised bran can then be stored for weeks instead of hours, which is what makes a plant outside the mill gate possible at all.

What it does to extraction

The same extrusion step makes the material better for solvent extraction: bulk density rises, the pellet is porous and permeable, percolation in the extractor improves and the solvent ratio drops. One step solves a quality problem and a process problem at the same time, which is why extruders are standard on rice bran lines and rare on other oilseeds.

Refining: Two Steps Nobody Should Skip

Wax is not optional

Rice bran oil carries a wax fraction that clouds the finished oil and plugs filters. Dewaxing — cooling, crystallising, filtering — sits after bleaching and before deodorisation. The wax removed is itself saleable to cosmetics and polish manufacturers, so the step is not pure cost.

The deodoriser distillate is where the money is

Rice bran oil is valued for gamma-oryzanol, plant sterols, tocopherols and octacosanol. These concentrate in the deodoriser distillate, so a plant that treats distillate as waste is throwing away a second product stream. Plan recovery from the start; retrofitting it later costs more than the equipment.

What One Tonne of Bran Gives You

Fraction Typical yield Note
Rice bran in 1,000 kg 15-20% oil, freshness decides everything downstream
Crude oil 150-180 kg Darker and higher FFA than most crude oils
Refined oil 120-150 kg Depends on incoming FFA and wax content
Rice bran wax 3-5 kg Sold to cosmetics and polish makers
Deodoriser distillate 3-6 kg Oryzanol, sterols, tocopherols — recover, do not discard
Defatted bran 780-820 kg Feed or fertiliser, high fibre

Where This Line Fits

  • Rice mill group adding an oil line beside its own milling capacity
  • Regional processor collecting bran from a cluster of mills through satellite extruders
  • Refinery buying stabilised bran or crude rice bran oil
  • Nutraceutical-oriented plant planning oryzanol recovery from distillate

FAQ

How fresh must the bran be?

As fresh as the logistics allow, and extruded within 24 hours at the latest. Beyond 72 hours the free fatty acid level makes premium grade impossible and refining loss rises sharply. This is why rice bran plants are sited by collection radius, not by cheap land.

Can I press rice bran instead of extracting it?

Pressing is possible but inefficient. Bran carries only 15-20% oil and is bulky and fibrous, so a press leaves too much oil in the meal at any commercial scale. Extrusion followed by solvent extraction is the standard route above small pilot size.

Why dewax rice bran oil?

Because the wax content is high enough to cloud the oil and foul filters. Dewaxing removes it after bleaching, and the recovered wax is a saleable product in its own right.

What happens to the deodoriser distillate?

It carries gamma-oryzanol, sterols, tocopherols and octacosanol — the compounds that make rice bran oil valuable. Treat it as a product stream and plan recovery from day one; treating it as waste is the most common expensive mistake on these plants.

Tell Us Your Bran Supply, Not Just a Tonnage

Rice bran projects live or die on the collection radius, so start there.

  1. Daily bran tonnage available and how many mills it comes from
  2. Distance and travel time from the furthest mill
  3. Whether an extruder exists on site, or stabilizing is part of the scope
