Coconut Oil Production Line | Two Routes, Copra or Fresh Meat

Coconut oil production line in two routes: copra pressing plus refining for RBD coconut oil, or fresh meat cold pressing for virgin coconut oil. The two share cleaning and filling but not the core equipment, so the route has to be chosen before anything is quoted.

Coconut is not one production line. There are two, and they barely share equipment. Route A dries the meat into copra, presses it and refines the crude oil into RBD grade. Route B takes fresh coconut meat, cold presses it and filters it into virgin coconut oil. Pick the wrong route and no amount of tuning will make it produce the grade you planned to sell.

Two Routes: Choose One Before You Buy

Route A: copra to crude oil to RBD

Copra is dried coconut meat, traded at 60-65% oil content. It is crushed, conditioned and pressed, then the crude oil goes through degumming, neutralisation, bleaching and deodorisation. This is the volume route: it tolerates copra of varying age, produces a neutral, odourless oil, and is what food manufacturers, soap makers and industrial buyers purchase.

Route B: fresh meat to virgin coconut oil

Fresh coconut is dehusked, deshelled, pared free of the brown testa, washed, grated and cold pressed, then the oil is settled and filtered. No heat, no chemicals, no refining. The result is virgin coconut oil with the aroma and lauric profile that cosmetic, nutraceutical and premium food buyers pay for. Yield is lower and the material has to move fast, because fresh meat spoils within days.

The Two Routes Side by Side

Item Route A: copra / RBD Route B: fresh meat / virgin
Raw material Copra, dried to 6-7% moisture Fresh coconut meat, used within days
Preparation Crushing, conditioning Dehusking, deshelling, paring, washing, grating
Oil recovery Screw pressing, optional solvent extraction Cold pressing only
Post-treatment Degumming, neutralisation, bleaching, deodorisation Settling and filtration
Reference capacity 1-20 T/H pressing, 50-500 TPD extraction, 30-300 TPD refining Sized to daily fresh nut intake, small to mid scale
Typical buyer Food manufacturer, soap and oleochemical plant Cosmetic, nutraceutical, premium retail

Reference capacities. Final sizing follows your raw material intake, moisture and target grade.

Three Coconut Oil Properties That Decide Your Customer

Melting point around 24 C: it will go solid

Coconut oil sets below roughly 24 C. That is a property, not a defect, but it changes packaging, tank heating and shipping advice. Buyers in temperate markets ask about it every time, so the answer belongs on the page rather than in the third email.

Lauric acid near 48%: it decides who you can sell to

Coconut oil is a lauric oil, with lauric acid around 48% of the fatty acid profile. That single figure is why the same barrel can go to a food plant, a soap works or a supplement brand. Buyers will ask for the fatty acid composition, so the certificate has to travel with the shipment.

FFA tracks copra moisture: quality is decided at intake

Free fatty acid rises when copra is stored damp, because lipase keeps working on wet meat. High FFA means higher refining loss and a darker, harsher crude oil, and it makes virgin grade impossible. Drying copra to 6-7% moisture is a quality control step, not a storage detail.

Technical Parameters

Item Specification
Route Copra pressing and refining, or fresh meat cold pressing
Capacity - pressing 1-20 T/H (copra route)
Capacity - extraction 50-500 TPD (copra route, where the meal has an outlet)
Capacity - refining 30-300 TPD (RBD coconut oil)
Oil content Copra 60-65%; fresh meat around 33% on a wet basis
Key quality parameters Free fatty acid, moisture, colour, fatty acid composition (lauric acid)
Melting point About 24 C, solid at ambient temperature in most markets
Process route Copra: crush, condition, press, degum, neutralise, bleach, deodorise. Fresh: dehusk, deshell, pare, wash, grate, cold press, filter
Installed power, steam and water Issued per project in the technical offer

The By-Products Are Not Waste

  • Coconut shell — Activated carbon feedstock, or boiler fuel
  • Husk and coir — Coir fibre, growing media, fuel
  • Copra meal — High fibre, limited inclusion rate in feed

Where These Lines Fit

  • Copra crushing and refining plant supplying RBD oil to food manufacturers
  • Virgin coconut oil line for cosmetic and nutraceutical buyers
  • Integrated coconut processor using shell and husk as by-products
  • Existing copra trader moving into pressing and refining

FAQ

Can one plant make both virgin and RBD coconut oil?

Only the cleaning, conveying and filling sections are genuinely shared. Virgin oil needs fresh meat and no refining; RBD needs dried copra and a full refining train. Some plants run both as two separate lines under one roof, but they are not one line with a switch.

Why is copra moisture so critical?

Because lipase stays active in damp copra and free fatty acid climbs. High FFA means more refining loss, darker oil and off-flavour, and it rules out virgin grade entirely. Dry to 6-7% moisture and store dry, or the loss shows up in the refinery.

Does coconut oil going solid mean it is poor quality?

No. Coconut oil melts around 24 C, so it is solid in most temperate rooms and liquid in the tropics. Packaging, tank heating and shipping advice should account for it, and buyers should be told before the first shipment, not after.

Pressing or solvent extraction for copra?

Copra carries 60-65% oil, so pressing recovers most of it without solvent. Extraction only makes sense at larger scale and when the meal has a buyer, because copra meal is high in fibre and its feed inclusion rate is limited.

Tell Us the Route and the Tonnage

Three answers are enough for a first proposal.

  1. Which route: RBD from copra, or virgin from fresh meat
  2. Daily raw material intake, and for route B how fast fresh nuts reach the plant
  3. Target market: food manufacturer, cosmetic, nutraceutical or retail bottling
